Join us for the showcase of the Guernsey Venture Challenge businesses as they compete for one of three prizes that could take their ventures to the next stage. After six weeks on the mentoring programme, and two business masterclasses facilitated by Blenheim Chalcot's Red Team, our eight businesses will present their honed pitches to our panel of judges in what promises to be an exciting event for the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

 

What is the Guernsey Venture Challenge?

Launched in 2022 and returning for its second year in 2023 GVC is a tech accelerator programme run by the Digital Greenhouse in partnership with Blenheim Chalcot, as part of the SMART Guernsey programme.  The programme aims to support tech entrepreneurship and accelerate businesses. 

This year the challenge offers £70,000 of grants to support local startup businesses, comprising of:

  • £40,000 First Prize
  • £20,000 Second Prize
  • £10,000 Third Prize

 

The eight shortlisted businesses for 2023 are: 

  • c-section uk - A digital solution for c-section education, aiming to support the 6,700 women a month who will give birth via c-section with the correct knowledge before and after the procedure.

  • Cloud Wealth - A customer-centric application that brings together different advisors to share information, render services and execute complex advisory functions without compromising on data security and trade secrets.

  • Stage Portal - A subscription-based platform, sitting as a central hub for live event management. Bringing together key event management functions, standardised artist and venue information and crew resources, enabling the powerful automation of complex time-consuming tasks.

  • KIWI - A platform designed to bridge the gap between job-seekers and HR professionals within International Finance Centres (IFCs) across the globe. 
  • Petlearnia - A digital e-learning platform to engage, pet owners to understand their pets. Whether it’s an illness, a diagnostic plan, or part of routine healthcare, a vet can prescribe the learning material to help support the pet owner and make visits more efficient and less stressful.

  • The Fund Society - An online hub for investment and fund professionals, bringing together relevant thought leadership, intelligence and insight from partners, complemented with a curated news aggregation service delivering commentary on markets and the investment industry.

  • Three Brain Training - A training programme to support leaders and teams to reverse burnout, supercharge performance and maximise well-being
  • WXplr - A platform to help individuals and companies plan and book their workations without the hassle of research and other time-consuming tasks.

The Judges

Charles Mindenhall

Co-founder of Blenheim Chalcot
Charles Mindenhall is the co-founder of Blenheim Chalcot, the UK’s largest venture builder with a successful track record of building over 40 companies and a current portfolio value of over £900m.
 
Charles is a trustee of Onside Youth Zones, a charity providing state-of-the-art youth centres in deprived areas of the country, and chair of Onside in London, where they are currently rolling out 4 Youth Zones in the capital. Charles is also a trustee of the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, MHI (Mental Health Innovations) and Charity Digital Trust. 
 
Charles has an MA in Philosophy and Psychology from Christ Church, Oxford University, and was formerly at Monitor Company. 

Fiona Bateson

Director, Guernsey Community Foundation

Fiona Bateson, MBA (Henley), MA (Psychotherapy), is a non-executive director of both Savernake Management Ltd and Savernake Capital Ltd (a Guernsey registered fund manager). She is also a director of the Guernsey Community Foundation. She has an active interest in supporting start-ups, with investments in 25 companies based in either Guernsey or the UK.

Fiona’s career started in the City, ranging across broking and investment banking. She then spent 10 years in management consulting with Harbridge House and was a visiting lecturer at Henley Business School. She went on to set up her own management consulting business, specialising in organisations based in the finance industry. Her clients included Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC), Zurich Insurance, Zurich Re, Kleinwort Benson Investment Management, HFC, John Charcol, BP and the Cabinet Office. Her specialism covers strategy implementation, through to leadership and culture change, working primarily with main boards and senior management teams. Fiona is also a UKCP-accredited psychotherapist and holds a Diploma in Company Direction.

Marc Cohen

Sole Partner at unbundled vc

A professional investor in early-stage digital tech businesses. Marc has a passion for helping founders on their business journeys and a wealth of experience building businesses, including early-stage development, e-commerce, branding raising finance/investment and go-to-market strategy.

Paul Wilkes

Co-Founder at Osney Capital

Paul Wilkes is an investor in early stage ventures, focussed on Cyber Security and Data Privacy sectors. He is also an experienced lawyer with a demonstrated history of building and leading international teams. Paul has expertise in a broad range of investment and capital markets vehicles and transactions, with a keen focus on commerciality and strategy. He is a strong entrepreneurship professional with an MBA (distinction) from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and a mentor to startups as they move to scale.
