About Guernsey
Whether it’s for business or a better quality of life, relocating to Guernsey couldn’t be easier.
Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands, situated 30 miles from the Normandy coast of France and 70 miles from the south coast of England. Whilst geographically closer to France, Guernsey is English speaking, in the same time zone as the UK and just 35 minutes flying time from London Gatwick.
Guernsey offers a family-orientated, friendly, safe and secure community with high standards of healthcare and education. Warmer temperatures than the UK mainland mean islanders enjoy an outdoorsy lifestyle, making the most of the island’s amazing beaches, cliff walking and island-hopping experiences. A key advantage of island life is a typical commute of 20 minutes, offering a fantastic work/life balance. You can be at home with your family or out in the fresh air just moments after leaving the office.
As a Dependency of the British Crown, Guernsey relies on the UK for matters of defence and foreign affairs but is otherwise independently governed. The island is politically and economically stable and sets its own laws and rates of tax. In addition to there being no minimum revenue levels or annual tax requirements to gain residency, residents do not pay Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Wealth Tax. Income tax is levied at a flat rate of 20% with attractive tax caps available. For the majority of businesses, Corporation Tax is 0%.
Personal relocation to the island is incredibly straightforward, due to the island’s two-tier property market. For those looking to relocate to Guernsey for work, Employment Permits are available for certain specialised roles, providing residency in Guernsey’s Local Market. For HNW individuals, entrepreneurs and business owners, Guernsey’s Open Market offers a flexible and convenient route to residency.
Our pro-business government, world-class professional services and strong digital and telecommunications infrastructure make Guernsey an attractive jurisdiction for business relocation.
Relocating a business
In Guernsey, we know how business works and we work hard to provide a supportive environment in which business can flourish.
One of the many advantages of doing business in Guernsey is the ease and speed with which decisions can be made and businesses established. Guernsey has a pro-business government with pragmatic and helpful regulators – as well as access to world class legal, professional and financial services. With the majority of companies paying the standard corporation tax rate of 0%, establishing a business in Guernsey is an attractive option.
The island has a highly skilled workforce and a progressive Employment Permit Policy for those needing to recruit staff from off-island.
Relocating as an entrepreneur or HNWI
Whether you are thinking about your family’s wellbeing, have plans to sell a business, crave a more relaxed pace of life, or quite simply want to live in a safe and friendly environment, Guernsey has so much to offer.
Relocation to Guernsey is very straightforward, thanks in part to the Island’s two-tier property market. Homes in Guernsey are registered as being either on the Open Market or the Local Market. Whilst Local Market homes are essentially reserved for those who are locally born or who hold Employment Permits for certain skilled jobs, the Open Market provides a straightforward route to residency.
Open Market properties may be occupied by those holding UK passports, those with Right of Abode in the UK or those holding suitable visas. Buying or leasing a property in Guernsey’s Open Market gives you the right to live and work in Guernsey indefinitely. Residents can decide to work should they choose to but are not required to work provided that they are able to support themselves financially from investments or savings. It is also ideal for entrepreneurs or business owners, who are looking for complete flexibility and convenience when establishing a new home.
For those who do not hold a UK passport or have Right of Abode in the UK, the Entrepreneur Visa is available. This allows those looking to secure residency by taking on an active role in running a business in Guernsey to move to the island. Applicants must have at least £200k in their name which can either be invested in an existing Guernsey business or in the creation of a new business on the island. In both instances the applicant must have a significant involvement in the business and demonstrate how the business is of economic benefit to Guernsey. Successful applicants would be able to buy or rent a home in Guernsey’s Open Market and accommodate their children and spouse/partner. If you are interested in the Entrepreneur Visa, please get in touch with the Locate Guernsey team to find out more.
Relocating for work
Guernsey has a big heart and a history of warmly welcoming people who bring their skills, talent and enthusiasm to use for the benefit of its community.
The island’s progressive Employment Permit system makes relocation to the Island for those undertaking skilled and specialist roles very straightforward. Employment Permits are granted to those undertaking specific fulltime roles with skillsets recognised as being in short supply locally.
Employment Permits allow the holder to live in Guernsey’s Local Market, with the majority allowing the holder to bring their immediate family to the island with them. It should be noted that Employment Permits can only be applied for by a Guernsey employer, rather than the employee, so it’s important to find a position in Guernsey that offers a Permit with the role. Locate Guernsey can provide further information about recruitment agencies that can assist with your job search.
Those who do not hold a UK passport or have Right of Abode in the UK will also require a visa to live and work in Guernsey. Those that fall into this category can apply for a visa on approval of their Employment Permit.
