Guernsey Venture Challenge 2024 Shortlist Announced

Eight local tech ventures have been shortlisted for the 2024 Guernsey Venture Challenge!

This is the third year that we have run the challenge in partnership with Blenheim Chalcot, with a new cohort of focused founders looking to scale and develop their tech-focused ventures.

Eight local tech ventures have been shortlisted for the 2024 Guernsey Venture Challenge, and will now undertake an intensive 6-week accelerator programme with venture builders Blenheim Chalcot, in preparation to pitch for £70k of early-stage funding at the Pitch Night Final in September. Each business has been matched with an expert venture-building mentor and will undertake masterclasses to support them before their final presentations.

The Challenge ends with a Pitch Night Final where you can see the businesses compete for one of three prizes - £40k, £20k and £10k on the 19th of September. The three winners will then be awarded their prizes at the Véyaon Awards ceremony on the 21st of November!

Meet the businesses!

Founder, Mike Ozanne Co Founders, Rollo de Sausmarez, Charlotte Dunsterville, Colin Woodcock

UN1TY provides on-demand strategic advisory services in technology, sustainability, marketing, customer experience, and project management. We were driven to start UN1TY to bridge the gap for businesses needing C-suite-level expertise without the long-term commitment. Our services include developing business strategies in technology, sustainability, and customer experience, as well as providing change and project management services to support the implementation of those strategies. Our mission is to empower businesses to achieve sustainable growth and effective change management, leveraging our extensive experience and insights gained from helping numerous organisations navigate their unique challenges.

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?
We entered the Guernsey Venture Challenge to access the expertise of individuals who can help us accelerate the development and scaling of our portfolio analytics platform, ESGCalc and gain greater exposure to prospective clients of that platform. Inspired by previous winners who have significantly benefited from mentorship, industry connections, and support in the development of business strategies, we believe winning this challenge would empower us to enhance our platform's capabilities and expand our market reach, driving sustainable finance solutions globally.

Raglan Education Limited

Founded by Phil Neild

Six months ago, I cut a frustrated figure. My son was too interested in his phone which meant he was forever forgetting to do things, 'Just one more minute Dad I promise' So then it hit me, what if I could design an app that reminded him of the things that he needed to do automatically? At that moment, Surei - Simply Organised was born! My wife, a teacher of students with additional needs for nearly thirty years then suggested additional functions that would benefit a wider range of students. It is available for two parents and up to three child accounts which are all seamlessly linked together.

So what does it do?

  • Automated reminders are sent directly to your child’s phone at a time of your choosing with either text and/or voice notes.
  • Reminders can be set to appear in term time, during the holidays or both.
  • Set daily tasks and completion times with notifications from your child once completed.
  • Input your child’s daily timetable and select when you wish your child to see this every morning.
  • Set tasks with a reward of your choice - with photo evidence required for the parent to approve.
  • Allow your child to notify you of any achievements or books that they have read - again photo evidence is needed for the parent to approve.
  • Set countdowns to major events such as birthdays or the end of the term
  • Enter tests and assignment deadlines. - All activities can be synched with the child’s personal calendar.
  • Set up friendly competitions between siblings or a child and a parent with a series of activities which score differing points. The winner achieves a target score or the highest scorer in the specified time.
  • Available in seven languages.
  • Ideal for parents who are separated.
  • All activities can be input by either the child or the parent helping the drive for increased personal independence.

We aim to provide the app for FREE to the Learning Support Departments of any school that wishes to use the app for their students, any charitable organisation in addition to any Guernsey resident. A new app using similar technology to remind aged parents of key events (including when to take medicines) is in production with a launch date planned for September.

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?

To enable me to meet with like-minded somewhat aged entrepreneurs who are unsure of what successful social media marketing actually looks like and to raise exposure of the project. In addition to gaining some much-needed funding to help me realise a dream.

The Quarry

Founded by Warren Mauger
To provide trusted engaging local news that cuts through a world of mistrust, and misinformation, we realised there are large numbers of local news businesses closing down or struggling to provide engaging content. We believe rethinking how this is created and delivered can provide a vital opportunity for journalists and consumers and help engage local communities.

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?
We took part in the Startup Academy and really benefited from some of the insights this brought. We know we need to harness AI to make this business work and believe having a mentor to challenge us through the challenge will be very useful in creating a strong foundation.

Trainerfy Limited

Founded by Viviane Kamworth & Niall Kamworth

Trainerfy is a personal training business connecting PTs and clients together to achieve their fitness goals. We currently offer distinct personal training services for individuals, small groups and corporates through our qualified PT of over 12 years, Niall Kamworth. Based on his personal experience as a PT, Niall found there was minimal assistance offered to PTs once they qualify. Therefore, he identified a gap in the market for a SaaS system focused on growing a PT's self-employed business by focusing on their development, depending on where a PT is in their lifecycle.

The platform will create a community to share knowledge and help grow a PT’s business by “matching” them to prospective customers through extensive marketing, enhancing their customer management solutions and improving efficiency. In return, a client can find a PT best suited to them and be incentivised to continue focusing on their health through our system.

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?
After completing the Startup Academy programme, we learnt so much about growing and launching a SaaS platform in a group setting. It was a natural progression to apply for the Guernsey Venture Challenge for more one-on-one mentorship and tailored guidance from experienced experts in this field.

Kloakify

Founded by Jack Quick

In 2021 my passport scan - and other information - was hacked from my employer’s servers and sold on the Dark Web. They’d stored everyone’s ID, as well as bank details, and even the physical access codes to their building on their servers without even basic password protection.

”Luckily" I’d replaced my passport a few months earlier, after accidentally washing it with my jeans. (Joys of having ADHD!) Thousands weren’t so lucky. People didn't get paid. People's credit ratings were damaged. One even lost out on buying a house as they were in the process of exchanging. And the company is being sued in a class action and has suffered huge reputational damage.

The next job I took was for a major CyberSecurity company and I was stunned when the HR department asked me to email my passport. Did they not know how insecure email is? If the HR department at one of the world’s leading CyberSec companies were this naive, who else was? I’ve been in tech my whole life (for everyone from tech startups to Waitrose and the NHS), first as a developer, marketer and designer, then as project manager and CTO - so I wanted to solve this problem. Kloakify helps people to send and receive sensitive documents like passport scans securely and easily, allowing them to control how the file is stored and used. Identity theft is a huge problem worldwide. 1/3 of Americans have been victims, while in the UK last year 69,000 were affected and it’s estimated to have cost the economy £27bn. Yet employers, landlords, and even AirBnBs routinely ask people to email scans of passports, driving licenses, bank statements and other sensitive documents that can be used to steal someone’s identity.

Email isn’t secure and often the scans are just left in their inbox indefinitely, or copied to other computer systems which may or may not be hackable. Many people choose poor passwords or reuse their email passwords, so if another website or social network gets hacked, so does your passport. It’s ridiculous. But it’s also understandable as there’s no well-known, easy-to-use way to share sensitive documents securely. We believe Kloakify can be the WeTransfer of sending sensitive documents. The market is anyone who’s ever rented an apartment, got a job, taken out an investment, or gone on holiday. Eg. Everyone in the developed world. Of course, we know it’s not sensible to target everyone when we launch, so we’re currently evaluating which niches are most receptive.

You can use Kloakify as a security-conscious person (and we’ll use marketing to help you become security-conscious!!) by buying credits on a pay-as-you-go basis. Or we offer a subscription for companies who regularly need to receive sensitive documents, such as HR departments, recruiters, letting agents, wealth managers, tourism, and law firms. Kloakify hides your ID from the bad guys.

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?

Having taken part in the Startup Academy I know how valuable the training was and so I’m hoping the Guernsey Venture Challenge will help me develop our proposition even further. And of course were we fortunate enough to secure some funding this will help us with software development and marketing.

factforge.ai

Founded by Sebastian Napiorkowski
factforge AI was born out of my experience working as a contractor for one of the largest chemical producers in the world. During this time, I witnessed firsthand the immense challenges faced by researchers and professionals in staying up-to-date with the rapidly expanding body of scientific literature, as well as the difficulties in sifting through the large body of documents acquired through company acquisitions.
The sheer volume of research made it difficult to find relevant information, understand key findings quickly, and apply them effectively. Driven by the desire to make scientific knowledge more accessible and useful, I combined my expertise in artificial intelligence and software engineering to create factforge AI.
The platform leverages advanced technologies to simplify the way people interact with scientific literature, making it easier to find relevant information, understand complex data, and make informed decisions. It strives to give professionals, researchers, professors, and students a tool to organize their findings—"Forging Facts."

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?

I entered the Guernsey Venture Challenge to pivot during the tough job and contracting market of 2023. In times of crisis, creativity thrives, making it an ideal period for startups. I built upon a project I led at a chemical corporation, aiming to transform it into a successful venture.

MAP Health

Co-Founded Andrew Melton & Claire Reach
MAP Health is a comprehensive digital platform that allows non-specialist medical professionals to seamlessly integrate personalised medical wellness services into their practice. At the centre of MAP Health is the Dashboard which allows real time collaboration for clinicians and their patients as they work to improve selected health metrics.
Our platform is the first of its kind to provide clinically-researched recommendations for blood & DNA tests, nutrition, and exercise programmes specifically designed for wellness and longevity to all clinicians. Andrew and Claire collaborated on several projects whilst Andrew was at Healthxchange Pharmacy and Claire was working for Novo Nordisk.
During this time, they were also working on their own concepts, which have now joined to become MAP Health. As Claire often says, “Intersections lead to breakthroughs” and the formation of MAP Health is a clear example of this!

Why did you enter the Guernsey Venture Challenge?
The support offered through the Guernsey Venture Challenge will allow us to improve and refine our idea, whether we are successful in winning or not.
We are thankful for the amazing support offered by the teams at the Digital Greenhouse and Blenheim Chalcot. It truly demonstrates how fortunate we are to build our business in Guernsey.

Demeter

Founded by Jonathan Johann Edward
We were running a small, super-busy marketing agency, and struggled to scale whilst maintaining quality. We experimented with checklists; files; project management software; workflow and more. Nothing worked well enough.
Project management didn't work well for large volumes of repeating processes; workflow managed queues, but didn't manage service levels; other systems didn’t give real-time visibility; and so on. In addition, no system provided a systematic way to continuously improve processes over time without confusion and costly business disruption.
After attending a lecture by the folks who invented "Lean Thinking", a light went on. The lecturer talked about how Lean Thinking was de-riguer in manufacturing and distribution, but not in services. So, we wrote our own software to implement the principles of Lean Thinking for our service business, and it worked: it helped us scale our own agency globally, whilst maintaining consistent standards, processes, and visibility across multiple locations and time zones.
Indeed, it worked so well that some of our clients purchased the software, and saw productivity increases of up to 30,000% as a result! Several of these clients won awards for their implementations. The application itself is very horizontal, so we started to use it for non-marketing functions such as finance, training, and HR with equal success. For example we reduced debtor days from 90 to 44! Even today there are very few Lean Thinking service implementations (that we know of). Yet it is clear that most service businesses would benefit from implementing Lean thinking (especially bureaucracies such as government).
We believe Lean Service Processes would transform productivity growth, and myDemeter's process management tools are designed to make implementation simple and scalable for service businesses. In effect, one can write most of one’s own custom business applications using myDemeter.com, in a visual, no-code environment, and integrate to standard applications (such as accounting) in order to make processes seamless end-to-end, with the added bonus that Lean principles and methodologies are built-in. Consequently, it made sense to port the application available to a SaaS platform, and target clients across various industry sectors and business functions. So we did a major rewrite, utilising the latest technologies, to create myDemeter.com.
Our strategy is to couple this with the other technology that promises to transform services productivity: Artificial Intelligence (“AI”). By providing a manageable methodology to implement AI in a gradual, systematic way, we believe myDemeter.com can be at the cutting edge of 2 major sources of productivity growth.
In summary, the driving force behind myDemeter.com is our mission to drive up productivity in service businesses through Lean Thinking process management.
